Pit bulls attack Phillipsburg police

PENNSYLVANIA -- Pit bulls attacked police this afternoon in Phillipsburg, sending an officer and two others to a hospital and leaving two dogs shot dead, police said.

Police were called at 1:35 this afternoon to the 100 block of Riverview Road in Phillipsburg for a report of two pit bulls attacking their owners.

Phillipsburg police Chief Ed Mirenda said the officers tried to help the owners, who were holding the dogs down. But the dogs got loose and one attacked Patrolman Louis DeLuca, he said.

A second pit bull charged an officer entering the home, but the officer shot the dog and avoided injury, Mirenda said.

DeLuca, with scratches and the bite, and the two owners, with bites, were taken to Warren Hospital. All were to be treated and released, Mirenda said.

Another pit bull was in the home but did not attack, he said. He said charges related to dog licenses are pending.

DeLuca, through Mirenda, declined to comment.

A man who answered at the home refused to comment.
