UTAH -- A 14-year-old boy was recovering Wednesday from puncture wounds and scrapes on his leg that he suffered after being attacked by a pit bull while trying to protect his younger brother.
The two brothers were walking from their home to a church function Tuesday about 8:35 p.m. in the area of 500 South and 1200 West, when a pit bull being held by its owner reportedly broke free and "aggressively" approached the 5-year-old boy, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson.
In an attempt to protect his brother, the 14-year-old put the young boy on his shoulders and kicked the dog, Josephson said. The dog responded by biting the boy's calf before running off.
The boys' mother took the older brother to the hospital to be treated.
Josephson said animal control officers believe they know who owns the dog and where the owner lives. The dog was last seen being chased by its owner after the attack, he said.
