CALIFORNIA -- A pit bull was shot by a Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputy in Thousand Oaks this weekend after it charged the officer, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Whitecliff Road after two pit bulls escaped from a residence while the owners were away, said sheriff's Capt. Mike Aranda. A person who was house-sitting at the residence was unaware the dogs had gotten out, said the captain.
After escaping, the pit bulls attacked a small dog that was being walked by its owner, and the owner called authorities, Aranda said. The dogs also tried to attack a jogger in the same location, he said.
When deputies were trying to get the dogs back into their yard, one of the animals charged one of the deputies, who shot the dog to keep from being injured, Aranda said.
The house-sitter took the injured dog to an emergency veterinary clinic, Aranda said.
The dog was euthanized at the clinic, and the person who was caring for the dogs was cited for violating a leash law, Los Angeles County Animal Control officials said.
