GEORGIA -- A Polk County woman was [attacked] by a dog Thursday afternoon, apparently while trying to protect her own dog from attack.
The woman, whose identity could not be immediately confirmed, was rushed to the emergency room at Polk Medical Center around 1:15 p.m. Thursday by private vehicle.
The elderly woman was assisted by electrical contractor Doug Ray, owner of Ray Electric, of Rome. He and co-worker Tracy Rogers were working in the area and were flagged down by one of the woman's neighbors.
“A pitbull and another dog jumped on her dog,” Ray said. “She tried to break them up. The pitbull turned around on her and mauled her hand pretty bad.”
Ray said he performed some first aid on the woman at her house, while Rogers ran the attacking dogs off. Ray said he drove the woman to the hospital in her vehicle, with Rogers following behind in their work truck.
The woman needed surgery on her hand, Ray said.
At the hospital’s ER, he talked with Polk County Animal Control, but did not know if the dog had been found.
“Apparently it belonged to a neighbor, and they’d never had any trouble with the dog before,” Ray said.
Meanwhile, Ray said the woman’s dog, which appeared to be a small pug type, had injuries but was not seriously hurt. The dog was moved to a pen for safety while the pet’s owner was treated at the hospital.
