ARIZONA -- Surprise resident, Maryann Hunula, 72, on Thursday was fighting to recover from an attack by two pit bull terriers as she sat in front of her home in Surprise.
Emergency medical workers responded to the scene at about 8 p.m. Monday in the 15000 block of West Jackpot Way.
Police said the dogs escaped through an open backyard gate down the street from where Hunula lived.
The two dogs attacked Hunula and bit her several times on her arms, legs and shoulders. It is not clear how many times Hunula was bitten. However, the more serious injury was on one of her legs, right below her knee.

Hunula was airlifted to John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital in Phoenix where she is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A neighbor, who was also bitten after trying to help the victim, was taken to a local hospital for injuries.
Off-duty Phoenix police officer, Michael Hubbs, lived next door to Hunula and came out to help when he heard screaming. Hubbs shot and killed both dogs after they reportedly charged after him.

The dog's remains will be taken to a state laboratory for mandated rabies testing.
The dog's owner has not been arrested but police are recommending dog at large charges against the owner.
