Woman Mauled by Pit Bulls in Serious Condition

MaryAnn Hanula, left, was attacked by the
neighbor's pit bulls that were loose

ARIZONA -- She was sitting outside of her Surprise home when she was viciously attacked by a pair of pit bulls -- and now MaryAnn Hanula is fighting for her life.

Hanula's 93-year-old mother is describing the attack.

"We were watching Dancing with the Stars and she went out to feed the rabbits, we had lettuce and carrots, if I would have known…" says Jean Hanula. "I said 'MaryAnn, are you okay' and she didn't answer me."

Jean and her 72-year-old daughter live together, and take care of each other. Jean could hear her daughter screaming as neighbors tried to fight the dogs off. Jean has trouble walking and was trapped inside of her house.

"The dog started jumping on my door and I closed the door."

An off-duty Phoenix Police detective lives down the street and rushed over to help. The two pit bulls charged after him and he shot both.

The owner of the pit bulls believes her dogs were provoked.

Someone ask this idiot how a 72-year-old woman
'provokes' two loose pit bulls into attacking

"I don't feel like it was my fault and I'm really worried about that person," says owner Cynthia Montoya.

She says the dogs were locked up in the backyard and she's not sure how they got out.

"Those dogs were raised with children, they were well raised, I don't understand what happened with the dogs."

Neighbors told us the dogs were extremely aggressive, even dragging MaryAnn at one point. The entire neighborhood is devastated.

MaryAnn took care of her older neighbors -- cooking for them and dropping in to check on them daily. They say they don't know how they'll go on if MaryAnn doesn't make it.

"She is a very nice person, she wouldn't hurt nobody, she's a very good person a very good person."

The dogs' remains will be checked for rabies, which is standard procedure. There's no word on whether the dogs' owner could face charges.

MaryAnn remains in serious but stable condition at John C. Lincoln Hospital.
