Victims of pit bull attack released from hospital

Hero Sonny Lawson

WEST VIRGINIA -- The young girl attacked by a pit bull in McDowell County and her grandfather, who was injured while trying to save her, have both been released from a Charleston hospital.

Six-year-old Nathalie Tinney and her grandfather, James Redmond, were both discharged on Tuesday, hospital officials tell WVVA. Tinney underwent surgery on her arm as a result of the attack Sunday. Nathalie's mother, Bethaney Redmond, who also suffered injuries trying to help her daughter during the attack was discharged earlier.

The three were injured at a family home in Welch Sunday when the adult male pit bull broke free from the chain that kept it tied to a tree.

The dog first attacked Nathalie. Her mother and grandfather were injured trying to save the girl.

A neighbor, Edgar 'Sonny' Lawson, is credited with keeping the situation from being much worse.

Lawson heard the screams from the attack and rushed to the victims' aid, keeping the dog off with a cane until a sheriff's deputy was able to put the dog down.

[In the video, Mr Lawson says that after fending off the pit bull, he told the grandfather to crawl to safety. The grandfather said, "I can't. I can't" and he told him he had to.]
