Boy, 2, Suffers Face, Scalp Wounds after attack by pit bull mix

FLORIDA -- A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized with head injuries Wednesday after being attacked by a pit bull.

The toddler was at a relative's home on Leslie Drive in Port Orange with his family when authorities said the dog attacked him Tuesday afternoon.

The boy suffered bites to his face and scalp.

"I didn't sleep last night. I had nightmares," witness Arjen Ziekman said. "All I could think about was seeing that child's face."

Ziekman heard screaming coming from the home across the street and saw a blood-covered child in his father's arms. The father was yelling for help.

The evidence of what happened could still be seen on a sidewalk one day later.

"It looked like the baby had been scalped, and I (saw) humongous lacerations all on the face," Ziekman said. "It was horrible."

The owners of the dog declined comment except to say they have an infant living with them, and the [PIT BULL]  has never touched the baby.

Witnesses said it definitely attacked the visiting toddler.

"They tried to pull the dog off, and apparently, they had a very difficult time," Ziekman said. "The dog would not let go. They kicked it and everything else to try to get it off."

I'm assuming one of these lovely ladies defended the pit bull,
insisting that it's around this baby all the time and hadn't ever tried
to kill it like it did with the 2 year-old.

Police said the dog was seized and quarantined while an investigation is completed.

The 2-year-old was transferred from a Volusia County hospital to Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando. He was listed is in stable condition in intensive care.
