Owners watch as dog is savaged to death

UNITED KINGDOM -- A couple have been left devastated after their beloved pet was attacked and killed by two other animals at a Burton beauty spot.

RIP Molly

Angela Dent, from Stanton Road, Stapenhill, was walking her two-year-old pedigree Papillon, Molly (pictured), on a riverside path near Stapenhill Gardens on Wednesday afternoon when the dog was savaged by two German shepherd dogs.

Passers-by managed to catch the dogs, which were not accompanied by an owner, but Molly could not be saved.

Mrs Dent, 49, told the Mail: “I was walking the dog by the river when these two Alsatians just went for her. She ran for her life but they ran after her and caught her. One of them just got her round the neck and threw her up in the air like a rag doll. It was like living a nightmare. I felt so helpless because I couldn’t do anything.”

Mrs Dent’s husband, David, also 49, said his wife’s ordeal was all the harder as she was recovering from breast cancer, and said losing Molly was ‘like losing a child’.

He said: “Normally my little dog is off the lead and if other dogs come along they just greet each other and move on, but these two just went for her.

“The dogs went running off towards the swan in Stapenhill Gardens.

“A lady who witnessed the attack lives next to a hairdresser’s shop nearby and a guy from there got some rope and managed to tie the Alsatians up before the police took them away.

“Neither of the Alsatians had collars on but the police told us they’d managed to trace the owner as one of them was microchipped.

“My wife’s recovering from breast cancer and had just started to venture out again. This was only the second time she’d been out in the car since she was in hospital and then this happens.

“We feel utterly lost. Molly was part of the family and for us it’s like losing a child.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman confirmed the force had attended the incident, which happened shortly after 2pm on Wednesday, and was investigating the matter.
