NEBRASKA -- A 2-year-old Plattsmouth girl is recovering at home after a pit bull bit her on the face on Friday. She went to the hospital and needed stitches. The girls' father says it was just a horrible accident.
The toddler had bites to her neck, cheek and near her eye.
Peanut, a female pit bull, was placed in quarantine after Friday's incident. Authorities now say the pit bull will be euthanized.
Police say the girl was trying to hug the dog when it bit her three times, causing facial injuries.
The girl's father says his daughter has had several interactions with Peanut throughout the time that the two families have been neighbors.
He believes in this instance, his daughter went to try and hug Peanut and give her a kiss when the dog attacked.
The whole thing played out in 2 minutes time. Just after it happened, according to the girl's father, Terra Flemings, the dog's owner, ran the girl down the hill to her family.
She was taken to Bellevue Medical Center and then transferred to Children's Hospital and Medical Center, where she got stitches.
Her father says he believes the bites are superficial and will not leave much of a scar, if any.
He believes it was a total accident and holds no ill will towards Flemings. He's forgiven her.
Authorities feel differently. "The child's safety should have been number one. Precautions should have been taken. Supervision should have been provided," said animal control officer, Sue Baker.
This is not the first time Peanut has bit a child. She was taken by Flemings to the Nebraska Humane Society in May, when the family lived in Bellevue.
The dog bit Flemings' son's face then, too, after the boy allegedly laid on top of Peanut, who was laying on a couch.
Mark Langan of the Nebraska Humane Society says that while they never saw the boy's injuries in person, his mother said that the injuries were not serious.
Flemings, 38, was charged with misdemeanor child neglect.
Plattsmouth police will bring the report to the county attorney to determine if more charges will be filed in this case.
The girl has since been released and is at home recovering.
