Woman's arm injured in pit bull attack

WASHINGTON -- A female pit bull terrier is in quarantine after biting a 54-year-old Wenatchee woman as she was walking her Yorkshire terrier Friday afternoon.

The pitbull was taken to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society where officials there will determine if the dog has rabies, said Officer Kerry Bayliss with the Humane Society.

Karla Mandrell said she suffered bite marks on her right arm and was treated and released at Central Washington Hospital.

“I am so lucky that I did not fall down,” she said. “I just kept turning in circles, trying to get my arm away.”

She said the incident happened about 4 p.m. as she was walking her small dog, Koki, near her residence in the 600 block of Yakima Street. She said she heard someone say, “You shouldn’t walk by here because we have a pit bull.”

Mandrell said she jerked Koki into the air as she saw the pit bull coming toward them. Mandrell said she thinks the pit bull grabbed Koki by his coat, and the 2-year-old Yorkie was not injured.

Bayliss said she could not answer questions about the owner of the pi tbull. She referred those questions to Sgt. Jody White, who is not on duty until Tuesday.

Said Mandrell: “It’s a miracle we both survived. The pit bull had Koki in his mouth and there is not a sign of anything on him; I took all the assault.”
