Family accuses pit bull of attacking 10 year old

MISSOURI -- For the second time, a dog in Franklin County is accused of attacking a child. The latest incident happened over the weekend when family members said a 10-year-old was viciously attacked by a pit-bull.

Police believe the dog was a mixed breed and said its owner could be in trouble.

A run in with a dog left a boy needing surgery on both arms and needing more than 50 stitches.

Franklin County sheriff's deputies say the attack happened outside a Labadie home on Friday afternoon.

10 and 12 year old cousins were at the home helping family members work on the place. Police said the boys walked outside when they noticed what seemed to be a friendly dog. The boys turned to go back inside when the dog jumped on the 10 year old from behind when he was knocked on the ground.

Family members said it was a pit-bull that attacked the child, and said the dog was trying to bite the boys neck. The dog was able to get both the child's arms as he fought to cover his face while the dog kept biting. The bleeding victim told his parents the dog was so strong, he threw him into a creek, still not letting go until being forced off.

In a statement the family said, no doubt in our minds the dog was trying to kill him.

"The dog has since been quarantined and that's usually for 14 days and I guess once that's finished the disposition will be decided," said Sheriff Gary Toelke.

"I'm not sure what breed it is but it is a mix and I think it had been involved with a bite before with another child so whatever breed it is it definitely needs to be secured and pinned up," said Toelke.

At least for now the family has decided against pressing charges but police said the case could still be sent to the prosecutor to determine what if any charges will be filed.
