Staffordshire terriers attack woman and her small dog

AUSTRALIA -- When two stray dogs bounded down the street towards Anna Trtrkulja at Sutherland, she picked up her dog Poppy, screamed and tried to fend them off.

‘‘I thought, ‘I know we are in trouble’,’’ Mrs Trtrkulja said. The dogs bit her stomach and clamped on to her arm after biting her Maltese-cross shih tzu on its upper leg.

Nearby removalists put her dog into the cabin of their truck at which point the unleashed dogs ran off down Park Street.

Mrs Trtrkulja said she is too frightened to walk in the streets around her unit block after the attack in Waratah Lane two weeks ago. She described the dogs as a white Staffordshire terrier with black markings and a white bull Arab cross.

Mrs Trtrkulja hopes anyone who might know the dogs or their owners will come forward because she does not want anyone else to be attacked.

‘‘There is a chance these dogs might attack someone, maybe kids,’’ she said. ‘‘What would have happened if my grandkids were with me?’’

The attack has cost her more than $2,000 in veterinary bills and surgery for her arm.

‘‘I just want to find these dogs.’’

Mrs Trtrkulja said she wanted to thank the removalists who saved her dog and her neighbours for helping her until paramedics took her to Sutherland Hospital for treatment.

Sutherland police and Sutherland Shire council rangers were called to the scene and patrolled the area for the dogs. Police and the council are investigating the matter.
