Dog dragged out of its own yard and mauled by pit bull has died of its injuries

NEW JERSEY -- A dog that was attacked by a pit bull last night has died, animal control officers said.

A resident called police Sunday night after seeing a pit bull dragging the dog by its throat, down the alley near the rear of the 100 block of Wayne Avenue.

"The pit bull went into someone else's yard, attacked their dog, drug it out to the rear by its throat into another yard," Sgt. John Breece said last night.

When officers Jason Woodhead and Nathaniel Bolognini arrived at approximately 6:19 p.m., they were unable to control the pit bull, and shot the dog.

The owner of the injured long-haired terrier mix was unable to pay the medical bills, and turned the dog over for treatment, Animal Control Officer Joseph Antonello said today. The terrier died last night, he said.

The pit bull was male, estimated to be 1-1/2 years old, and the terrier was 3 to 4 years old.

The owner of the pit bull has not been located yet, and Animal Control Officer Jason Riley is investigating. The pit bull hasn't been tested for rabies yet, Antonello said.

Anyone with more information is asked to call Trenton Animal Control at (609) 989-3254.
