'Horrific' animal neglect in Whitby

CANADA -- Jenny got a new leash on life because of a phone call.

The starving 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier was left to die was rescued from an unheated shed in Whitby after the someone called in a tip.

Humane Society of Durham Region investigator Debby Houghton found the six-pound emaciated and dehydrated dog on Dec. 29 lying on a torn piece of carpet living in its own feces.

“The Yorkie Terrier wasn’t moving when I got there, and when she tried to get up, she fell down,” Houghton said. “I could smell the stench, her eyes were shut due to crusty puss and her mouth was bleeding. Fur had grown into the teeth.

“It was horrible and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing...It’s a pretty bad case compared to the ones I’ve seen,” said the 22-year veteran of animal cruelty investigations.

The owners of the dog left the dog unattended for weeks and officials say the dog would have died “within days” had they not received the tip.

Houghton said the dog had been severely neglected.

The dog’s ear canals and eyes were full of puss from an infection, and her mouth was bleeding and gobs of fur was found inside her mouth tangled in her teeth.

When fur was pulled from her mouth, the dog lost a few teeth. Her nails were also severely overgrown.

Since her rescue, she was named Jenny and has gained three pounds.

“We’re optimistic. She’s improving everyday,” Houghton said.

“This case just illustrates when people take the time to tip us off, it saved the life of this dog, otherwise, according to the vets, she would have died within days,” Houghton said.

Charges are pending as the case remains under investigation.
