Officers capture stray dog believed to have bitten 3-year-old Lancaster girl

CALIFORNIA -- Animal control officers caught a stray dog believed to have bitten a 3-year-old girl in Lancaster, authorities said today.

The girl was bitten by a pit bull / Labrador mix dog about 8:30 a.m. Dec. 21 while she was in her front yard in the 44000 block of 18th Street West, said Evelina Villa of the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control.

"We have spotted the dog on a few occasions since the attack, but it eluded our officers by running into the desert," said Marcia Mayeda, director of the county agency. "Fortunately, we have been able to track the dog's travel patterns over the past few weeks. A team of county animal control officers were able to catch the dog over the weekend while it was heading back toward the desert from a local Lancaster neighborhood," Mayeda said.

The girl was bit in the face and the dog was scared off by an adult family member and the girl was rushed to a hospital.

Now that we've got the dog, it will be held under observation and hopefully its owner will come forward, said Danny Ubario, shelter manager for the Lancaster Animal Care Center. "It's important to report stray dogs in your neighborhood to minimize the public safety risk in the community."
