Probation for Tucson man whose attacking dogs were killed by cop

ARIZONA -- A Tucson man whose dogs were shot to death by a Tucson police officer after they attacked an octogenarian last fall has been placed on 18 months supervised probation by Tucson City Magistrate Nikki Chayet.

Kevin Nelson pleaded guilty Friday to two biting dog charges in exchange for a number of other violations being dismissed, said Alan Merritt, a city prosecutor.

Nelson must pay $980 in fines and $3,127 in restitution, Merritt said. He also isn’t allowed to have dogs while on probation.

An 86-year-old man was walking his dog near East 22nd Street and South Wilmot Road last October when two pit bulls attacked the dog and the man intervened to save it, Tucson police said. Several neighborhood residents called 911 and went to help the man.

An officer shot both pit bulls several times after the dogs continued to be aggressive and presented a threat, police said. The dogs died at the scene.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics treated the victim for non-life-threatening injuries.

The man later took his dog to a veterinary hospital, but Merritt said Friday he did not know the extent of the dog’s injuries.

Nelson, 24, was originally facing 14 misdemeanor violations because of the attack and the fact the dogs had no current licenses or vaccinations, weren’t wearing tags and were running at large, according to court documents.
