MISSISSIPPI -- Two Monroe County sheriff's deputies were hospitalized after being attacked by a pit bull.
The incident occured around 6:30 p.m. on Egypt Road Wednesday.
Deputies Tiffany Taylor and David Mitchell responded to a call from a pedestrian who was attacked by a pit bull, one of several dogs at the residence.
Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says the attack was brutal.
"A pit bull dog had attacked a person down there, mauled him up and down his legs and groin area." says Cantrell.
Cantrell says that when the deputies arrived, they walked into the yard and were attacked.
"When they got down there, the dog had been tied up," Cantrell adds. "And they were going to the owner of the dog, and to make a long story short, the dog attacked them. He broke his chain and attacked both officers. One of the officers was kicking him back. And the other officer was responding, trying to help him.
During that time, she was thrown to the ground, and the dog attacked her, biting her up and down her arm."
Cantrell says the animal was put down with Humane Society representatives on hand.
He met with county supervisors Thursday morning to discuss the possibility of adopting a vicious dog
ordinance.
The dog's remains have been sent for testing to determine if it had rabies. The sheriff says both deputies are in good shape but will not be at work right away.
No charges have been filed against the dog's owner, at least for now.
Cantrell says he's seeking advice from the attorney general's office.
