Pit bull that mauled Bay City boy quarantined

MICHIGAN -- A dog that mauled a 6-year-old Bay City boy Saturday night is quarantined at the Bay County Animal Control, pending prosecutors' decision whether or not to charge its owner with a crime.

Assistant County Executive Michael K. Gray said the dog is a pit bull. Tests are being conducted to see if the animal is positive for any contagions, Gray said.

Shelter staff on Wednesday forwarded the results of their investigation to the office of Bay County Prosecutor Kurt C. Asbury.

Gray said prosecutors gave him strict instructions to not comment further until they've decided to proceed.

Bay City police have said the dog attacked the boy around 11 p.m. Saturday at a house in the 400 block of 19th Street. The dog belonged to the boy's neighbor, police have said.

The boy was taken to McLaren-Bay Region, but later airlifted to University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor for treatment of a facial laceration.

Neither police nor Gray could divulge the name of the boy or the dog owner.

The Times was unable to reach Asbury for comment.

In January 2011, Bay City resident Harry McDaniel was charged with a felony count of owning a dangerous animal causing serious injury after his pit bull attacked an 8-year-old boy. McDaniel eventually pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with an additional 180 days deferred.
