NEW JERSEY -- An 18-year-old Elizabeth woman was bitten more than 20 times today by her dog, which then turned on a police officer who shot and killed it, authorities said.
The incident occurred this morning on tree-lined Fernwood Terrace, according to Sgt. Stephen Negrey, an Elizabeth Police Department spokesman. The woman was first attacked by the dog, a pit bull rescue, inside her home.
"She was in her bedroom when the dog went crazy and started attacking her," Negrey said.
She fought her way outside, where someone called police. Raul Delaprida, a detective who was working an off-duty job nearby, responded and found the dog attacking her on the front yard, Negrey said. When the animal turned on him, the detective fired two shots, striking the dog once, the spokesman said. The dog later died.
“The dog was a rescue who was once abused,” Negrey said.
The victim told police she had no feeling in her right arm and couldn’t move one of her fingers. She was taken to Overlook Medical Center in Summit for treatment.
