CALIFORNIA -- The mother of a 2-year-old boy bitten by the family dog in Castro Valley was arrested after Alameda County sheriff's deputies found feces, dirty dishes and household chemicals within the child's reach at their home, authorities said Wednesday.
Brandi Gomes, 30, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment Tuesday after her son was bitten in the head and chest by the family's dog, a pit bull-German shepherd mix, at their home on the 21000 block of Gary Drive.
The boy's father, Jared Lee Perkins, 36, was also arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.
Perkins remained in custody Wednesday at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $100,000 bail. But Gomes was released so she could be treated for an injury to her hand, which she may have suffered while trying to rescue her son, said sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson.
The boy is being treated for severe wounds at Children's Hospital Oakland but is expected to survive. The dog has been quarantined.
Prosecutors will decide whether to file charges against the boy's parents.
When deputies arrived at the home, they found dog feces on the floor, dirty dishes and other evidence that it had been "neglected for a long time," Nelson said. There were chemicals in the house that the boy could have gotten into, he said.
"It didn't appear they could adequately provide for a 2-year-old," Nelson said of the parents.
The home's condition was primarily why the couple were arrested, but the boy's injuries from the dog attack were a "contributing factor," Nelson said.
He said the couple's statements about what happened didn't match what deputies found.
"When the physical evidence doesn't back up exactly what they're saying, there's probably more to the story," Nelson said. "That's what we're working through."
