Toddler mauled to death by pit bull in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO -- A toddler in New Mexico died when the family dog unexpectedly attacked.

It happened yesterday at this home in Las Cruces.

A 52-year-old woman was baby-sitting her granddaughter.

They were playing in the backyard when the family's two-year-old pit bull suddenly attacked the little girl.

The grandmother tried to intervene and was also attacked.

A neighbor heard the commotion and rushed over with a gun, shooting and killing the dog.

The grandmother was accidentally shot in the leg during the incident.

The child later died at the hospital.

"The little girl I know was just, she was just the apple of her grandfather's eye, you know. It's sad when anybody gets hurt by an animal. It's a bad reputation for the animal. You know, so, it was really sad what happened."

Police don't expect charges to be filed against the neighbor who killed the dog.
