FLORIDA -- A Port Richey girl hospitalized after being bitten by the family pit bull has been identified by Pinellas deputies.
Molly Kerby, 3, was transported to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of Tampa, according to the sheriff's office.
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office responded to a report at 5:46 p.m. Wednesday of a dog bite at 7410 Buchanan Drive and found the girl with a serious bite to the lip.
The dog was to have been taken from the home by animal services.
According to a preliminary investigation, the girl was lying on the couch while eating when the dog tried to take her food, the sheriff's office said. The dog was injured as a family member tried to get the dog to release the girl's lip.
