Another dog attacked at Colorado Springs park

COLORADO -- Aggressive dogs continue to be a regular problem at a park in Colorado Springs. On Tuesday a woman says her puppy was mauled by two other dogs and she says their owner did nothing to stop it. The puppy was injured so badly, he has stitches all over his head.

Brutus a 4-month old Weimaraner is recovering from a vicious attack by two pit bulls. "There was just a lot of blood and it was really scary," said Kari Livanec, his owner. Brutus was attacked at Bear Creek Dog Park in Colorado Springs.

"His ear was pretty much split wide open. He had cut open his lip, all around his nose. He had holes down to his skull," said Livanec.

Livanec says she snapped a picture when she says the owner of the pit bulls fled. "He basically just bolted. He didn't show any empathy or wasn't sympathetic. Nothing," said Livanec.

"Certainly dog parks are use at your own risk, however as a dog owner you have responsibility for your animal," said Erica Meyer, with the Pikes Peak Humane Society.

So far this year at Bear Creek Dog Park the Humane Soceity has responded to more than 50 calls, which includes reports of aggressive dog behavior and dog attacks.

Occassionally, animal control will supervise dog parks, however ultimately your responsible for your own pet.

"The number one rule they have if to only bring dogs that are under voice command and there a lot of things that go into that. Don't bring dogs that under socialized," said Meyer.

"You think of a dog park as a fun safe place to go and I would have never of thought something
like this would happen," said Livanec.

Livanec's vet says Brutus should make a full recovery, in the meantime she hoping someone will recognize the man who owns the pit bulls.

If your dog is attacked the humane society says report it to them immediately and try to exchange contact information with the other owner. If they leave, get a description of them, their dog and their car and license plate number.
