Wisconsin: Teen attacked by three pit bulls recovering after surgery. Owner of pit bulls also attacked trying to stop them from mauling the teen

WISCONSIN -- A Cassville teen boy who was attacked and bitten by three pit bull terriers on Monday needed several hours of surgery to repair the damage, authorities reported.

The Grant County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that the attack was reported at 11:32 a.m. Monday near a residence at 7277 Garden Prairie Road.

The 15-year-old, who runs track at Cassville High School, was running past the residence in the town of Cassville when the three pit bulls came at him.

"He was ultimately bitten several times by the three pit bulls," the release said.

Bernice Koelker, an owner of one of the dogs, tried to get the dogs away from the teen one at a time, to bring them back to the residence.

She also was bitten during the attack, and was taken to the hospital.

Charges are pending, the release said, and the attack remains under investigation.
