Man fined $5000 for letting dog attack grandfather in Croydon

AUSTRALIA -- A man who let his dog attack an 84-year-old grandfather has been fined almost $5000.

The grandfather was walking with his grandchild through Silcock Reserve in Croydon when the child was chased by a pit bull-type dog.

The grandfather asked the owner to put a leash on the dog, but the dog attacked him.

It bit the man on the buttock and lower right leg, causing serious lacerations.

Ringwood Magistrates’ Court heard the dog owner made no attempt to stop the attack and left the scene without offering assistance.

He was charged with failing to register an animal, allowing a dog to be off leash within 15m of a children’s playground, and being the owner of a dog that rushed at or chased a person.

The man had to pay $4900 in fines and costs.

The dog was destroyed.
