Woman charged with animal cruelty after 5-month-old pit bull was set on fire

ALABAMA -- Marketa Renee Sharpe, 28, was arrested Sunday night and charged with animal cruelty after a 5- to 6-month-old pit bull was burned on her property, according to police.

Prichard police received a call from Sharpe’s neighbor Sunday evening between 4:50 and 5:30 p.m. in regards to a dog being on fire. The police and Prichard Animal Resources Center went to Sharpe’s house on 128 East Azan Street and found the burnt dog dead in the back yard.

Andrew Stubbs, director of the animal resources center, said when he arrived at the house there was smoke and a distinctive odor.

Stubbs stated there are many dogfights in the area, and this incident could be linked to that. There was more than one person at the house when the dog was found, said Stubbs, causing further investigation.

Stubbs said this is the worst incident of animal cruelty he has ever seen.

Sharpe is being charged with 1st degree Animal Cruelty, a Class C felony. She was released Sunday around 9 p.m. on $3,000 bond.

Sharpe faced charges in 2008 for child-endangerment, and again in 2009 for child abuse and third-degree domestic violence.
