Cincinnati Police Insist Dead Dog Was Given Fresh Water, Checked Repeatedly

OHIO -- The Hamilton County Prosecutor will not press criminal charges in an incident on Friday in which a dog died, less than two hours after it was brought to the District Four headquarters in North Avondale. But Cincinnati Police have launched an internal investigation into the incident.

Local 12 has learned that a citizen found the dog running loose and was able to get hold of dog. The citizen could not take the dog to the SPCA, so they brought it to District Four headquarters on Reading Road.

An officer told the citizen to tie the dog up outside. The officer found a salad bowl and gave the dog water and called the SPCA around 5:30 p.m. asking that they come and get the dog.

Police tell us that officers checked on dog every 15-20 minutes. At 6:50 p.m., as an officer was going out to check on dog, someone coming into the headquarters said they had whistled and dog was not responsive. The officer confirmed the dog died and canceled the run with the SPCA.

The internal investigation is not yet complete but police have already conferred with the prosecutor who has determined there was no criminal intent and so, no criminal charges will be filed.

Police say their internal investigation will help them find out why the dog was not brought inside the station or moved to a shaded area. Friday's official temperature was 104 degrees.
