Animal cruelty case heading to trial

MICHIGAN -- The two people charged with cruelty to animals were arraigned in Dickinson County District Court on Thursday.

The case against Joan Khoury and Kathy Khoury involves more than 60 animals, including 30 horses.

The two women pled not guilty on Thursday. They're charged with four counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals at two locations.

Danette Johnson, who first discovered the horses, says she wants to see justice served for the animals.

"The state they were in was just awful and there's no reason anybody should treat an animal the way these animals were treated," said Johnson.

Each count carries up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. The court may also order them to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, pay for cost of care and be forbidden to own animals.

The two women are scheduled to go to trial on October 5.
