MISSOURI -- An Independence police officer shot a dog after the German shepherd bit his owner and two officers, authorities said.
Officers were called to northwest Independence about 4:30 p.m. after the dog bit his owner, who needed to go to the hospital.
The dog managed to escape through a hole in the fence, and officers cleared children away from the area, Police Capt. Bill Vaughan said. The dog lunged at one officer and bit him on the shoulder, according to authorities.
The officer shook the dog off, but the dog then bit a second officer on the ankle. The officer fired his weapon at the dog, which was taken to the Independence animal shelter, Vaughan said. The dog may not survive.
A second dog, a pit bull, was also seized. A third dog was allowed to remain with the family.
The owner's wife told KCTV5 she urged officers to shoot Chico or have him put down because he had proven to be a danger to his family and others.
The female pit bull will be destroyed because the family didn't have a special license to own the dog inside the city limits of Independence.
