MINNESOTA -- A brutal fight between a dog and its owner left a Woodbury man with puncture wounds and the dog mortally wounded.
Police were called Aug. 9 to a residence in the 11000 block of Sand Castle Drive for a dog attack. A man there reported his 5-year-old pit pull attacked him without provocation at the home.
The man was able to get away from the dog and armed himself with an 8-inch butcher knife. He attempted to leave the house, but the dog lunged at him again.
The resident responded by stabbing the dog twice on either side of its ribcage. The man was left with multiple puncture wounds to his forearms and legs, and a large scratch on his body. He later drove himself to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
The dog was still able to track police officers and appeared able to lunge. A community service officer caught the dog with a restraining pole and another officer administered the dog the drug ketamine.
Police said the dog appeared to be mortally wounded; it was taken to an Oakdale veterinarian by the CSO. The dog’s owner indicated he wanted the animal euthanized to prevent future attacks against others.
The dog was euthanized and sent to the University of Minnesota for rabies testing. Police said the rabies test came back negative.
