Hudson Falls man charged with shooting family's dog

NEW YORK -- Authorities have charged an upstate New York man with cruelty to animals after police say he shot his family's dog and left it for dead in the woods. The dog survived but had to be euthanized.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says 27-year-old Sanford Perkins of Hudson Falls told deputies that on Aug. 7 his 2-year-old Springer Spaniel named Dwayne was allegedly aggressive toward his young child. [Without bothering to take the dog to a shelter or call Animal Control to come and get the dog] Officials say Perkins took the dog to a wooded area in the town of Kingsbury and shot it twice.

Deputies say Perkins, defending his actions, insists he thought Dwayne was dead and left. But the dog survived, and a neighbor found him eight hours later and contacted authorities.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian, but it had to be euthanized the next day.

It couldn't be determined if Sanford had a lawyer.
