CANADA -- One of the two pit bulls involved in Wednesday’s attack will be put down, according to Gatineau Police.
The owner of the pit bull signed the dog over to the Gatineau SPCA, allowing them to dispose of the dog at will.
According to police, the SPCA opted to euthanize the dog.
Gatineau Police spokesman Jean-Paul Lemay said the second dog is in the custody of the SPCA under police authority, but a decision regarding the dog’s fate has not been made.
The dogs were taken after Wednesday’s attack, when a 44-year-old Gatineau man was looking at a Toyta Tercel for sale on Lorrain Blvd. in Gatineau.
The dogs attacked the man’s face, who will require surgery on his mouth and left eye.
Lemay said the investigation is complete, however charges have yet to be laid against the owner.
The owner will not be charged under any criminal law, but Lemay said it is likely they will be charged under municipal bylaws.
Pit bulls are not banned in Quebec, but Gatineau bylaw requires any potentially dangerous dog to be kept in a closed building or locked area large enough to contain the dog, or muzzled on a leash no more than two meters length.
Among the regulations, owners must also pass a basic obedience and training course with their dog, have a license for each dog, and walk only one dog at a time.
