INDIANA -- The puppy is a pit bull mix, no more than six months old. At Animal Care and Control, they're calling him "Miracle."
An Indianapolis man stabbed his puppy multiple times this morning after an argument with his roommate, police said.
Officers responded to the incident around 10 a.m. at the 1200 block of West Ray Street. They discovered two men, one armed with a knife, arguing in an empty grass lot. A woman then appeared outside "crying hysterically" and had the puppy "with blood all over it in her arms," according to a police report. The puppy was barely breathing.
One of the men, police said, told officers an argument began between him and his roommate, John Madden, 22, after Madden's puppy ate his cat's food. Madden then grabbed a knife and took the puppy outside, where he began stabbing it with a silver knife, police said. The puppy cried so loud that neighbors came outside to see what was wrong, police said.
Madden told officers he was stabbing the puppy to "put the puppy out of his misery" and was trying to kill it, police said.
The puppy underwent surgery at Indianapolis Animal Care and Control for nine stab wounds, one of which was a 6-inch cut to its belly. Adam Garrett, spokesman for Animal Care & Control, said Miracle is out of surgery and a vet has taken him home. The prognosis is looking good.
Madden was arrested and faces preliminary charges of cruelty to an animal and possession of marijuana.
