Woman wanted in pit bull attack arrested

CANADA -- A woman wanted aggravated assault charges in relation to a two-dog attack has been arrested after she called police, but did not want to give them her location.

Sundre RCMP said Rita Phillip, 47, was in police custody Friday following her arrest in a casino in northeast Calgary.

Cpl. Ryan Hodge said the Calgary police received a call on Thursday night from the accused, who identified herself and added the fact that she was wanted, but would not give her location.

“With the assistance from the public, CPS was able to determine that Phillip was at a casino in the northeast part of Calgary,” Hodge said.

“With the assistance of casino security personnel, Phillip was taken into custody.”

A warrant had been issued for Phillip’s arrest earlier this week after RCMP said she had fled the scene of a dog attack over the weekend.

On Aug. 19, a 26-year-old Calgary woman suffered critical injuries to her arms and face when she was attacked by two pit bull dogs while visiting a mobile home in Sundre.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim in a bedroom with wounds so severe they thought she was dead.

Hodge said the victim of the attack remains in a Calgary hospital where her condition is listed as stable.

“Police understand she is expected to remain in medical treatment for an undisclosed time,” he said.

One of the dogs was shot by police at the scene when it attempted to attack the officers. The other was seized and remains in quarantine in Calgary.

Results of a rabies test on the dog that was shot came back negative.
