Kandi Crow was convicted of animal abuse and neglect misdemeanor charges in 2009. Court records show she was sentenced to 10 days behind bars and had to pay more than 700 dollars in fines.
Now, Crow may be facing more charges. Over the weekend, Josephine County Animal Control officers served search warrants at her home, finding animals with broken legs and jaws, while others were nearly starving to death.
Marci Handley with Josephine County Animal Control says they even found dead animals, skulls and bones on the 80 acre property. Among the animals found: miniature horses, peacocks, llamas and goats.
“It's abusive to the animals,” said Sheriff Gil Gilbertson. “It's cruel to the animals. It's just not acceptable, and the scale of this thing is huge.”
However, Crow says she’s in shock. She is in the hospital, recovering from hip surgery.
“We put everything we got into making sure the animals are taken care of -- above and beyond,” Crow said.
Crow claims not all of the animals are hers, saying she takes care of others. With up to 10 people helping on the ranch, she always has enough food and space for more.
“It’s all irrigated, lush pasture,” Crow said. “There's grain and feed for everybody. There was no lack of food at all.”
As for the skulls found, Crow says they were remains of animals that had been buried and may have been dug up. She insists she can always take care of her animals and she has never had too many.
The district attorney’s office says it cannot comment on the case, as the investigation is just beginning.
