Loose pit bull kills small dog, injures handler in Olyphant

PENNSYLVANIA -- A loose pit bull killed a small dog and bit its handler on Gravity Street early Tuesday before a neighbor shot it to death, police said.

Borough Police Officer-in-Charge Lewis Kline said Jackie Blazek was walking her mother's small dog in the 400 block of Gravity Street at about 9:50 a.m. when the incident began.

A pit bull that had been running loose in a nearby yard, rummaging around a home's porch noticed the small dog - Officer Kline did not know its breed - and ran over to it.

The pit bull then attacked the small dog, killing it, and also bit Ms. Blazek, who was treated for a minor injury, Officer Kline said.

Hearing the commotion, a neighbor came outside with a handgun and shot the pit bull to death, said Officer Kline, who did not identify the neighbor.

Officer Kline said the pit bull belongs to Gerald Curcerello, of the 600 block of East Scott Street.

Officer Kline said Mr. Curcerello would likely be cited by the state Dog Law Enforcement Office for allowing his pit bull to run loose.
