Pit bull attacks 4-year-old boy on Madison's west side

WISCONSIN -- Madison police said a pit bull broke free from its leash and attacked a 4-year-old boy on the city's far west side Saturday afternoon.

The child suffered multiple puncture wounds to his head, hands, back and buttocks in the attack in the 2000 block of Westbrook Lane, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

Police said the boy's mother came to his rescue, and the dog's owner took control of the pit bull.

The dog's owner, a 46-year old man, was very distraught over the attack and said he had placed the dog outside, on the leash, in order for it to go to the bathroom, police said. The owner said the 11-month-old pit bull had no past history of aggression or violence.

Police said the pet owner voluntarily surrendered the dog to a Dane County Animal Control officer.

The child was treated at a local hospital and released.
