MISSISSIPPI -- A man attacked by two American bulldogs while reading meters is now recuperating at home.
Benji Chambley, who was reading meters for Delta Electric Power Association, was attacked by the dogs at a home on Carroll County Road 53 last week near Carrollton.
Tim McBride, district manager for Delta Electric's Winona district, said doctors reported that Chambley had no broken bones or other major damage and is at his Kilmichael home resting.
"He's doing good but still has some bad wounds," McBride said. "We're fortunate it wasn't worse than it was."
McBride said Chambley had replaced a meter and was returning to his truck when he was attacked by the dog.
Carroll County Sheriff Jerry Carver said the attack took place at a home near the Old Highway 82 near Spring Lake.
"It sounds like he'll be able to use his fingers, so that's very good," Carver said.
Chambley, who has worked for Delta Electric for the past 15 years, could be heard yelling for help by a neighbor and was assisted, Carver said.
Caver said his deputies were called to the home where the attack occurred by the dogs' owners later in the afternoon and were told the dogs would be put down as soon as they could do so.
"They were both put down by the owner's family," Carver said.
Carver said dog attacks are rare in Carroll County, and this was the first since he had been in office.
McBride said Delta Electric does not manually read meters anymore as a computer does it for them.
"It's been seven or eight years since we've read meters," McBride said. "Even then we'd have information about a home on whether they had bad dogs. A lot has changed in eight years and we don't know if there are dogs at a home or not."
