Widow of dog attack victim says she forgives dog owner

ALABAMA -- Police are investigating the tragic death of an elderly man after they say he was attacked and killed by dogs belonging to his neighbor.

83-year-old Donald Thomas of Leeds was checking his mail when the large Rottweilers attacked him.

Thomas' wife called police begging for help. When the officer arrived, he was forced to shoot and kill both dogs.

The love Donald and Sally shared began on a blind
date in 1949. From that moment, they were inseparable.

Billy Abrams was the victim's pastor. He says Thomas was a great person and a great husband. The last time he saw Thomas was at church, the same day of the attack.

Coincidentally, he says they talked about how "tomorrow isn't promised."

"Don had assurance in his faith in Jesus and Sally does the same and she knows where her husband is and that comforts her even though her heart is broken," Abrams said.

According to police, the animals belonged to a neighbor across the street, where police found 33 more dogs in cages.

They're now with Birmingham-Jefferson County Animal Control being evaluated.

No charges have been filed, and the case is still under investigation.

(in the video clip:) Mrs. Thomas says the dogs have escaped before and she was afraid of them, but for the most part, the dogs didn't bother them. Mrs. Thomas said they enjoyed spending time in the yard and that whenever she's outside, she'll think of Mr. Thomas, who was her best friend and soul mate.
