NEW YORK -- Four people are recovering from wounds at Stony Brook University Hospital after a Pit Bull attacked them while being taken out of his cage at a Ronkonkoma day care facility.
The attack happened last night at around 7:30 at the Hounds Town doggie day care, located on Garrity Avenue in Ronkonkoma.
According to police, two Hounds Town employees were taking the male pit bull, named Gino, out of his cage to relieve himself when he turned on them. A third employee rushed in to help, but Gino began to maul her as well.
That's when a female customer, waiting in the lobby to pick up her dog, noticed on the closed circuit television screen that Gino was attacking the workers. She ran into the cage area to help, and suffered bites and scratches also.
All four victims were female; the three employees were 21, 22 and 24. The female customer, 44, declined to be interviewed by the media. Two of the women needed stitches, WBCS 880′s Sophia Hall reported. The other two victims suffered minor injuries.
Owner Michael Gould said this is the first time a dog has attacked anyone in the 12 years that the facility has been open.
Gould said the dog had been at the facility before and had never shown any signs of aggression.
“I was taken aback because it was so unpredictable,” Gould said.
Gino will be confined for 10 days to be tested for rabies and then the owner will decide whether to euthanize the dog or place the animal in a sanctuary, Hall reported.
