Vicious Dog Roaming Tri-State Streets

OHIO -- A dog roaming the streets of Norwood attacked a puppy and the dog's description is similar to a dog that killed another dog earlier this year.

Bevin Kenney was walking her Springer Spaniel puppy, Murphy, Wednesday night on Drex Ave. when a strange looking dog approached.

"It attacked Murphy right here and went at him and dragged him down the hill," Bevin Kenney demonstrated as she stood on a hill next to Norwood View Elementary School. Kenney said she screamed and lunged at the dog in an effort to chase it away.

At one point the dog tried to attack her but Murphy intervened. As Murphy cried and yelped, Kenney said she walked back across the street with Murphy, the attacking dog followed them to her front door.

"I was absolutely terrified. I had no way of getting him off Murphy," Kenney said. She added, "I had warnings from neighbors that had spotted the dog, that had been approached by the dog and had even been attacked by the dog."

Kenney described the dog as a pit bull or boxer mix with a brown, brindle coat. She said it wore a metal choke chain and appeared to have tags. The dog was smaller and appeared to be very thin as if it had not eaten.

Norwood Police said Thursday they'd had several complaints over the last few months about a dog with a similar description charging people and trying to attack dogs. Lt. Tom Williams told Local 12 News he was concerned since the dog attacked near a school. He feared children or others could be hurt.

Meanwhile, on Warner Ave., Bart Stonebraker said his 10-year-old Bischon Frise, Butch, was attacked and killed by a dog in February.

Stonebraker described the attacking dog as "a brindle Boxer, brown and black." Stonbraker said he took his dog out "to do its business" one evening in February and a dog attacked Butch in his yard.

"I still had him in my hands and that dog was chewing him up. I was beating on his head with the leash and it didn't affect him ...then he went on down the street," Stonebraker said.

Bart Stonebraker said it was difficult to watch another animal rip his beloved dog apart as he tried to stop it. Stonebraker was bitten during the attack. And to add insult to injury, his wife died two months later following a battle with cancer. He compared losing Butch to losing a child.

"I hope they get him," Stonebraker said.

Meanwhile, Murphy and Bevin Kenney were fortunate. Neither was seriously hurt. Murphy lost some fur. Bevin Kenney said she hopes the attacking dog is caught before it attacks again.

"I do believe it should be removed from the public," Kenney said.

One of Murphy's owners is a Local 12 News employee.
