Convicted sex offender faces cruelty charges in malnourished horses case

DELAWARE -- A 35-year-old Camden man who turned over five malnourished horses to the Kent County SPCA last week has been charged with animal cruelty after surrendering to animal officials today.

Jeffrey R. Yeakel, of the 300 block of Morgans Choice Road, was released on unsecured bail after being charged today with three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, said Major Brian Whipple.

The court also ordered Yeakel not to obtain any new animals until his case has been adjudicated.

SPCA animal agents seized three Quarter horses, a Fox Trotter and an Arabian horse from Yeakel’s property Oct. 17 after they received an anonymous call that the horses were in poor health.

The animals were found to be severely underweight and in need of veterinary care, Whipple said.

Yeakel was told in July by a veterinarian that the four mares and one gelding would each have to gain between 153 and 333 pounds to be brought up to the appropriate weight, but he failed to comply with the recommendations, Whipple said.

The five horses have since been surrendered to the SPCA and are under the care of an equine veterinarian, who expects the animals will make a full recovery in time.

The Kent County SPCA is providing emergency medical treatment and shelter for the neglected animals and seeks donations from the public to help in their care.

Donations can be sent to the Kent County SPCA at 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934.
