Michigan: Funeral set for 3-week-old girl mauled to death by pit bull

MICHIGAN -- Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday for the 3-week-old girl mauled by a dog on Detroit's west side Thursday, as her family speaks out about the tragedy.

Maternal grandmother Dawn Ramirez said she lost her only grandchild, Tarilyn Luciana Bowles, in Thursday's pit bull attack in the 7700 block of Stahelin, near Tireman and the Southfield Freeway.

Parents "should be very mindful of their children -- watch animals around their children," Ramirez said today.

The dog was euthanized after it attacked the baby. Police said the baby's mother was staying at the home and thought the dog was outside when she set the infant on the floor, secured in a child safety seat.

Dawn Ramirez said she and Tarilyn's mother, Maricella (Mari) Ramirez, 24, had been estranged before Tarilyn's death.

"When the baby came, it brought our family back together," she said today.

Funeral arrangements have been provided at no charge by Risko-Ferguson Funeral Home, 7100 Michigan Ave., a location of Chas. Verheyden Funeral Homes. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family will meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, then proceed to Woodmere Cemetery, 9400 W. Fort St., for a graveside service.

A fund-raiser to collect money for a headstone for Tarilyn's grave was held Sunday at Woodhaven Lanes and a bank fund is being set up Tuesday for donations, Dawn Ramirez said today.
