Local woman banned from owning animals for the next 10 years

OHIO -- The Washington Township woman charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty accepted a plea deal Wednesday, which would prohibit her from owning animals for 10 years.

Virginia Secrist, 76, pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty in Sandusky County District Court No. 2. As part of the agreement, Secrist will not be able to own, harbor, keep or care for animals for at least 10 years.

"We just wanted to make sure that this will never happen to any animals again,"

Humane Officer Kelly Askins said. "We ended up taking away the thing that meant the most to her in her life. That's the greatest punishment as far as she's concerned."

On July 27, the Humane Society seized 14 animals from Secrist's home, including a miniature donkey which Secrist admitted to tying to a tractor and dragging along a mile road on her farm.

Judge Herb Adams ordered Secrist to pay $203 in restitution for the donkey's medical costs.

Askins said the animals are all in good condition and have been living in foster homes throughout the duration of the trial.
