Wis. woman's diary details dog abuse and death

WISCONSIN -- A Wisconsin woman is charged in a disturbing case of animal cruelty.

Prosecutors say 20-year-old Sean Janas poisoned her boyfriend's dog Mary and slit the animal's throat.

According to the criminal complaint, Janas kept a diary in which she wrote disturbing details about her dislike for and abuse of Mary, a four year-old German Shepherd / Labrador mix.

"I think its shocking and disturbing because it is hard to imagine anyone acting like that or feeling like that toward another creature," said Prosecutor LaMont Jacobson.

Police say the boyfriend's father discovered Janas' diary and turned it over to authorities.

According to the criminal complaint, Janus wrote a number of entries in the diary detailing her ongoing abuse of the dog.

“I need to find a way to kill her without it looking like I killed her,” Janus wrote. “I’ve done lots of things already. I’ve given her drano, bleach and a lot of pain pills lol one night she got all tweaked out because of it, it was so funny.”

“I have never hated an animal so much in my life, much less hate one or beat one. But the pleasure I get from watching her whimper in pain and cry out for help as I shove drano and bleach down her throat is like no other.”

"When I read through it initially I couldn't believe what this person had done much less reduced their thoughts to writing," said Jacobson.

The dog died June 4th. Neighbors reported hearing Janas yelling at the dog and later observed her striking the dog in the back yard with a leash. They believe she also stabbed the dog.

The criminal complaint states says neighbors complained about what was happening.

"At that time there really wasn't enough evidence to establish who had done it," said Jacobson. "Also, the dog was cremated before any examination could be done."

Prosecutors say the discovery of the diary gave them the evidence they needed to move forward with the case.

Monday prosecutors charged Janas with animal mistreatment and exposing an animal to a poisonous substance. She's being held in jail on a $2,500 cash bond.

Her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 31st.
