Woman might lose eye after dog attack

CALIFORNIA -- A 51-year-old woman was attacked Tuesday afternoon by a pit bull mix outside her east Bakersfield home.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office said Barbara Morehouse was bit in the face and arm. The woman's family members said she's in danger of losing her left eye.

The sheriff's office said Morehouse saw the loose dog and tried to put it back into her neighbor's yard when she was attacked.

Morehouse's neighbors rushed to her aid, and Kern County Animal Control seized the dog, which will be quarantined for a period of time.

saying the victim was holding her face

Neighbors said dangerous, roaming dogs have long been a problem at their trailer park. Their pleas to park management have fallen on deaf ears, they said.

This attack, they said, has given them new reason to seek help.

"Apparently they really don’t take it seriously enough until something like this happens," said one neighbor, who added he will start a petition to encourage management to clamp down on the stray dog issue.
