Sheridan woman faces animal cruelty charges after 62 dogs, cats removed from home; warrant issued

MICHIGAN -- A Sheridan woman will face animal cruelty charges after 52 dogs and 10 cats were seized from her home in October.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Nancy Muller, said Angela Holinshead, the director of Montcalm County Animal Control. Muller will be charged with abandonment and cruelty to 10 or more animals, according to the Montcalm County Prosecutor's Office.

Holinshead said the shelter received calls regarding the number of animals staying at Muller's residence and their condition. Cats and dogs of various breeds - Chihuahuas, pit bulls, Maltese and medium-sized breeds - were seized.

Lake Haven Humane Society of Newaygo and Bellowood Rescue of Cedar Springs played the helped place many of the animals in homes. Most of the animals were put up for adoption, and others with behavioral and medical conditions were adopted by rescues. Eight dogs have yet to be placed in homes.

One dog was euthanized for "serious medical and behavioral issues," Holinshead said in an email.
Of the 10 cats, three have been adopted by rescues. The others will be tested for feline leukemia before they are offered to the public for adoption, Holinshead said.

Holinshead said Muller is not affiliated with the county's animal shelter.

"Charges have been filed and we are just waiting on a court date before we will know anything further," she said in the email.
