“He had to have over 400 stitches. He was in surgery for almost two hours. It was just a horrific time. It was just awful,” said Dawn Herbert-Miller, the boy’s mother.
Dawn Herbert-Miller’s neighbor was babysitting her son at the time. He was brought inside the neighbor's home and apparently walked right over to three-year-old Milo. It happened in an instant…
“It’s turned my son’s life around. He can’t even go out to recess, he can’t participate in gym, he can’t participate in karate classes -- he went weekly. He can’t do hockey,” said Herbert-Miller.
Milo is a rescue dog -- a pointer/hound mutt. His owner didn’t want to speak on camera, but says the family is taking full responsibility, calling it a "tragic accident."
The owners added the dog's never caused trouble to neighbors before, stressing he's "not a dangerous, vicious dog."
The board of selectmen will meet at the end of the month, and with the public's input, will determine what happens next.
“They'll make a decision on determining whether the animal will be declared a dangerous animal or not,” said Jeff Collins, Animal Control officer.
It’s possible Milo could be euthanized -- but his owner told 7News, "I don't see how euthanizing [Milo] is going to heal any of [the child's] scars, it will only deepen the unseen scars" of his 15-year-old daughter, who was babysitting Dawn's son at the time of the attack.
The dog dispute has left neighbors on opposite sides of the fence.
