Police investigate Deloraine dog attack

AUSTRALIA -- A 10-YEAR-OLD boy is in hospital with significant injuries after being attacked by a dog at Deloraine on Thursday night.

Police said the boy was walking with his parents when he was attacked by a rottweiler.

Tasmania Police Sergeant Tony Roughan said the boy sustained a number of puncture wounds to his shoulder, face, ear and neck.

"He is currently in the Launceston General Hospital where he will be undergoing further procedures," Sergeant Roughan said yesterday.

"He has multiple puncture wounds but they are mostly superficial.

"He will remain in hospital for a further few nights."

Sergeant Roughan said the owner of the dog was present during the attack and was co- operating with police.

He said the owner would be proceeded against by summons.

Sergeant Roughan said that there were other dogs present at the time of the attack.

It is not known if the dog was registered as a dangerous dog, but rottweilers are not listed as a restricted dog breed in Tasmania.

The dog has been euthanised.
